700 trainee surgeons arrive for UK conference

More than 700 trainee surgeons are in Belfast today to take part in a three-day UK conference which takes in a series of events at Belfast Waterfront, Titanic Belfast and the Hilton Hotel.
The conference, which forms part of Visit Belfast’s three-year plan to secure £80 million from the conference and events sector, is worth around £1 million to the local economy.
Visit Belfast’s Chief Executive, Gerry Lennon, who is pictured with local surgeons Ciara McGoldrick and Chris Hoo as the event got under way, said:
“This weekend’s conference is the highlight of the academic year for trainee surgeons, and I’m thrilled to welcome everyone here for a busy weekend of educational courses, lectures and topical debate on all aspects of surgery and surgical training. I’m also pleased that the itinerary will allow delegates plenty of time to enjoy the world class attractions, amenities and hospitality which Belfast is becoming famed for.
Belfast’s place as one of the UK and Ireland’s leading conference and events destinations is firmly secured. Hosting the ASiT Conference is testament to Visit Belfast and the tourism industry’s success in attracting high profile conferences and events to a warm and welcoming city.”
Visit Belfast worked closely with ASiT’s current President Andrew Beamish and past president Ed Fitzgerald to secure the conference with financial support from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Belfast City Council.
